About This Resource

This guide grew out of two decades of working with gardens in very different places — each with its own soil, its own climate, its own native ecology. It is not a prescriptive planting plan. It is a way of thinking about land that begins with observation and ends with practice shaped by place.

The approach draws from the same philosophy that underpins Native by Nature: that good gardening starts with understanding where you are. The guide walks through how to read your site, choose species that belong there, and design with the slow rhythms of ecology rather than the fast cycles of fashion.

It is written for anyone who tends a piece of land — however small — and wants to do so with care, attention, and a long view. Whether you are starting from bare ground or rethinking a mature garden, this guide offers a way in.
