Paulownia Tomentosa Foxglove Tree Fast Growing Emperor Shade

Princess, Emperor or Foxglove tree,

although I prefer the latter of common names, has become somewhat of a nuisance in N.E America since it’s accidental introduction from Asia.

The sounds of the #seed pods cracking shells beneath my feet and rattling of pods above my head are from the seed heads from the stately Foxglove Tree towering skyward. I am instantly reminded of the beautiful Lavender flushed Lilac flowers from this Fast Growing Emperor #tree or annually pruned multi-stemmed shrub.

A large shade forming tree late to unfurl it’s enormous leaves was introduced to the USA from China as the seed pods were used as crate packaging long before polystyrene was invented.

Large wooden crates opened rail track side meant the dormant seeds were soon able to invade the embankments and trackside of N.E America. Considered a stately specimen tree of parks and #gardens in many regions and still a choice find in many areas of the UK.

A cultivated ornamental tree covered in lilac flushed foxglove like flowers just before the large leaves break dormancy, flowering for a few weeks in Spring the foxglove like flower spikes are well worth the wait and incredibly showy.

Following the flowers mammoth size leaves popular in modern landscaping as a multi-stemmed shrub creates much needed shade in sub tropical areas and will quickly grow to become a large specimen tree.

Popular with Hummingbirds and bees this tree needs plenty of room if you want to see the flowers and I would suggest carefully staking, pruning and shaping the tree to suit the location.

Pruning the fast growing stems of the Paulownia tomentosa just above soil level in Spring will encourage a multi-stemmed shrub with stung green leaves for modern day garden design.

Head Gardeners Tips:

I suggest sowing five seeds in each pot and growing them together as a multi stemmed shrub, in a single season the plant can grow rapidly and in time you will get large leaves a super back foil in a large final pot size with smaller pots of seasonal color in front .
