Pruning Grasses: A pictorial guide.

  

Grasses are a popular addition to mixed perennial borders and prairie style planting.

Maintenance of grasses is essential to keep them healthy and compact.
  

Depending on the season you may decide to cut your grasses back in late Autumn. 

Alternatively if you like the swaying of dried grasses in your garden then begin trimming your decorative grasses in early Spring. 

Ideally prune your garden grass hummocks before fresh new shoots begin to appear. 
  

Secateurs may be useful to prune away some of the long top growth. 

Garden shears are essential for removing the tougher stems and creating a rounded finish to your grass mound. 
  

Once you have carefully pruned your grass a small hand rake will help to remove and debris, slugs and snails that often make grass hummocks home.
